Aeration - Letting Your Lawn Breathe and Eat

aeration

Lawn aeration is the secret weapon in making your lawn healthy. Aeration involves making holes in the lawn either by pushing a rod into it or by "coring", extracting a plug of soil. By aerating your lawn you provide the following benefits to your lawn and its root system:

  • Oxygen gets to the roots and the soil allowing it to "breathe"
  • Organic fertilizers and nutrients get access to the root system
  • Water is able to better soak the soil and reach the root system
  • Helps to break up thatch
  • Tight, compacted soil is loosened up allowing the root system to grow

We recommend Lawn aeration as part of a regular lawn maintenance program. Aeration should be done at at least once a year preferably twice, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. We use top of the line equipment to ensure that we pull the deepest aeration cores possible. Depending on the size of lawn that you have and the ease of entry, aeration prices range from around $ 40/yard.

Some tips for successful lawn aeration include:

  • Marking sprinkler lines as to not getting punctured by the aerator.
  • Water your lawn heavily, up to an inch, the day before you plan on aerating. The soil should be soft and moist when aerating but not muddy.
  • Aeration should be done at least once a year preferably twice, once in the Spring and once in the Fall.
  • In arid / dry climates aerate twice a year.
  • Don't waste your time or money with shoe aerators.
  • Whenever possible, use a coring aerator as opposed to a spike aerator. Spike aerators just further compact the soil while making a hole.
  • After core aeration, leave the plugs on the grass and allow them to dry out, then rake the plugs into the grass if you like. It's OK if you don't as they will break up after the first mowing and help to breakdown thatch by providing micro organisms that will feed on thatch. Most plugs will be gone in 2-3 weeks.
